How do we use assessment to support learning at Somerdale?
At Somerdale Educate Together Primary School we use assessment as a key tool to support children’s learning by identifying individual strengths, areas for development, and learning needs. Here's how schools use assessment effectively:
Formative Assessments (Ongoing Feedback): Teachers use daily activities like quizzes, observations, or class discussions to gauge children’s understanding and adjust instruction accordingly. This helps identify gaps in knowledge early and provides targeted support to improve learning outcomes.
Summative Assessments (End-of-Unit/Term Tests): These assessments measure what children have learned over a specific period. They provide a benchmark for academic progress and inform teachers and parents about children’s overall performance and achievement.
Differentiating Instruction: Assessment results help teachers tailor lessons to meet the diverse learning needs in the classroom. For example, a child struggling with math might receive additional support or alternative teaching methods.
Setting Learning Goals: Assessment data is used to set clear, achievable learning goals for children. This motivates children and provides a clear path for improvement, encouraging them to take ownership of their learning.
Supporting Individualised Learning Plans: For children with special needs, assessments help develop Individualised Learning Plans by identifying specific learning challenges and tracking progress over time.
Parent-Teacher Communication: Assessment reports serve as a basis for discussions between teachers and guardians. It allows both parties to understand a child’s progress, address concerns, and collaboratively support the student’s learning at school and at home.
Self-Assessment and Peer Assessment: Encouraging children to assess their own work or the work of their peers fosters self-reflection and critical thinking. It helps them become more aware of their own learning process and how they can improve.
By using assessments in these ways, schools ensure that instruction is responsive to children’s needs and that each child receives the support necessary to reach their full academic potential.
